The British Council is a British organisation specialising in international cultural and educational opportunities. It works in over 100 countries, promoting a wider knowledge of the United Kingdom and the English language. The British Council encourages cultural, scientific, technological and educational co-operation with the United Kingdom and changing people’s lives through access to education, skills, qualifications, culture and society. The British Council is a charity registered in Great Britain and Scotland, and is governed by Royal Charter. It is also a public corporation and an executive non departmental public body, sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of UK.

The British Council has been working in Sri Lanka since 1949, offering a wide range of services and activities across the island. The British Council has over 25,000 library members, which is the largest membership in the British Council global network. We also run one of the largest English language centres and examination operations in our network, which has over 100 offices worldwide.
